What is mystery shopping? The Market Research Society (MRS) defines mystery shopping or ‘mystery customer research’ as: ‘The use of individuals trained to experience and measure any customer service process, by acting as potential customers and in some way reporting back on their experiences in a detailed and objective way.’ Mystery shopping is a specialized research technique that is used widely in many industries to measure the quality of service provided to customers. Additionally, mystery shopping is performed to research business trends, competitors, sales staff and other issues of company procedures to improve customer services, personnel and products. Why do companies use mystery shopping? Mystery shopping provides detailed insight into the companies’ staff, products and processes including competition business practices that are performed under normal conditions to consumers. Companies and Research Agencies find it necessary to collect evidence on whether policies and procedures provide the intended outcome and conclusions and whether consumers are being treated impartially and rightly. Mystery Shopping serves as a vehicle to measure and evaluate the impact of policies, compliance with our rules and examine customer experiences. Companies and the Research Marketing organizations regard mystery shopping as a very important and necessary means for harvesting the data and information. Mystery shoppers are esteemed and valued as supervisory evaluators who complete secretive visits to capture actual consumer experiences and document the authentic information about sales processes apparent genuine occurrence.
